Acting City of Harare Mayor, Councilor Enock Mupamaonde says only eight out of 61 refuse collection trucks in the capital are functional, and this has resulted in many suburbs and premises going for a long time without being collected.

Garbage piling has characterized most suburbs in Harare, resulting in an increase in illegal dumping sites.

"More than 50 refuse collection trucks are non-functional due to various mechanical problems, both minor and major, thus depriving ratepayers," said Cllr. Mupamaonde.

He said 100, 000 liters of fuel, two skid steer loaders and 30 refuse collection trucks should be available to clear these dumpsites.

"Four front-end loaders, 24 by 15 cubic-ton tipper trucks, two dozers, among others, are required to make it happen."

He, however, assured residents and stakeholders that illegal dumpsites will be removed to prioritize the good health of citizens and that more refuse trucks will be bought for each ward.

Cllr Mupamaonde urged stakeholders, the business community, churches, and fuel suppliers, among others, for assistance in any form.
